Recent market analysis reveals that Finland's large-scale solar energy sector experienced unprecedented expansion in 2025. According to data cited by industry association Renewables Finland, the nation added approximately 227 megawatts (MW) of utility-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity last year. This significant surge more than doubled the country's cumulative industrial-scale solar capacity, bringing it to a total of 352 MW.
This remarkable growth was primarily driven by the commissioning of Finland's first solar power projects exceeding 50 MW in scale. Notable completions in 2025 include the 107 MW Utajärvi solar park, currently the country's largest, developed by Skarta Energy in North Ostrobothnia. Industry experts note a trend of repurposing former peat production lands for such solar farms, a distinctive feature of the Finnish market.
Another landmark project commissioned last year was the 70 MW Simo solar park in Finnish Lapland. Developed by Exilion Tuuli Ky and Solarigo Systems Oy, it is recognized as one of the northernmost utility-scale solar installations in Europe, demonstrating the viability of solar power in diverse climatic conditions.
The momentum is expected to continue into 2026, with several large-scale projects nearing completion. These include a major solar plant exceeding 200 MW in capacity located in southwestern Finland. However, the industry outlook also presents challenges. Market observers point to a proposed Land Use Act, which may introduce new zoning regulations specifically for larger solar power plants. Industry advocates argue that such measures could potentially impact the pace and economics of future project development.
The expansion of Finland's solar sector has been supported by European funding mechanisms. Previous financing rounds have allocated substantial support to multiple Finnish solar projects, underscoring the strategic role of solar in the region's energy transition.
"As a global provider of high-quality solar mounting solutions, Longsun Green closely monitors these dynamic market developments," said a company spokesperson. "Finland's progress, from pioneering northern projects to navigating regulatory landscapes, offers valuable insights. It reinforces the need for robust, adaptable, and cost-effective solar infrastructure-a principle at the core of our product design and mission to support the global clean energy transition worldwide."
