The European Commission has announced a significant investment of nearly €650 million in cross-border energy infrastructure, as reported in its recent funding decision. This allocation from the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) will support 14 key projects aimed at enhancing energy security and renewable energy integration across the European Union.
The funding underscores the EU's strategic focus on strengthening grid interconnectivity, which is identified as crucial for stabilizing energy prices and ensuring a resilient energy supply. This initiative aligns with broader efforts to accelerate the continent's clean energy transition and improve competitiveness.
A substantial portion of the investment, approximately €470 million, is dedicated to six electricity and smart grid projects. Notable allocations include support for advanced energy storage solutions. Among them is a major grant for a reversible pumped-storage hydropower plant in Spain, designed to enhance grid flexibility for renewable energy without expanding its environmental footprint. Furthermore, a significant grant is allocated to modernize and digitalize electricity transmission networks between Bulgaria and Romania, facilitating more efficient and secure flows of renewable power.
In a milestone for the sector, the funding also designates over €176 million to develop hydrogen infrastructure, marking the first time CEF funds will support a hydrogen storage works project. This investment aims to foster the growth of the renewable hydrogen market and support the decarbonization of EU industry.
