A significant financial package has been secured to advance clean energy access in Benin, highlighting ongoing momentum in the distributed solar sector. Stichting Clean Energy and Energy Inclusion for Africa (CEI Africa) and the crowdfunding platform Energise Africa have jointly facilitated financing for the construction of nine solar mini-grid plants.
According to the announcement, CEI Africa committed a junior secured loan of $1.5 million. This investment was complemented by Energise Africa, which facilitated $970,000 in senior secured debt with an additional $420,000 expected. The combined debt financing totals approximately $2.9 million.
The projects, developed by OnePower's local entity Mionwa Generation SA, will be built across several rural communities in Benin. The planned installations will have a cumulative capacity of 595 kW, supported by 1.7 MWh of battery storage systems. Upon completion, these mini-grids are projected to deliver reliable, solar-powered electricity to an estimated 4,700 households and local businesses, replacing less consistent and more polluting energy sources.
In addition to the loan agreements, the projects will benefit from substantial grant funding. CEI Africa has allocated up to $972,000 in results-based financing (RBF) grants. Furthermore, the Universal Energy Facility (UEF), managed by Sustainable Energy for All, has dedicated an RBF grant envelope of $1.66 million for five of the project sites.
