A recent analysis by Environment North Carolina Research & Policy Center and Frontier Group examines the potential benefits of utilizing public school rooftops for solar energy generation across North Carolina.
According to the report, schools present unique advantages as sites for solar installations. Their large, unobstructed rooftops offer substantial available space, while their daytime electricity consumption patterns align well with solar production hours, maximizing on-site energy use.
Beyond clean energy generation, school solar projects can deliver multiple benefits:
Cost Savings on Electricity – With commercial electricity rates in North Carolina rising 24% from 2021 to 2024, solar installations can help school districts stabilize energy costs and reduce monthly utility bills. Excess generation can, in some cases, be credited back to the school through net metering arrangements.
Educational Opportunities – Solar arrays serve as living laboratories, providing hands-on learning experiences for students in renewable energy, environmental science, and STEM subjects. Some schools already use smaller solar installations as teaching tools.
Community Resilience – Schools often function as emergency shelters during hurricanes and other natural disasters. When paired with battery storage, solar systems can provide backup power during grid outages, enhancing community disaster preparedness.
Environmental Impact – The report estimates that fully developing the identified school rooftop solar potential could avoid approximately 1.3 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, along with reductions in nitrogen oxides and fine-particle pollution.
No Additional Land Use – By utilizing existing building rooftops, school solar projects generate clean energy without consuming additional land, avoiding conflicts with agricultural or natural spaces.
The analysis identified approximately 2,400 public schools in North Carolina with suitable rooftop space, representing over 900 megawatts of potential solar capacity. However, the report also notes that financial and policy barriers currently limit wider adoption.
