Ireland's cumulative installed solar capacity has surpassed 3 GW, marking the country's latest achievement in renewable energy expansion. The milestone comes less than a year after the 2 GW threshold was crossed in November 2025, underscoring the accelerating pace of solar deployment across the nation.
According to the Irish Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment, the total includes both rooftop installations and utility-scale solar farms. Grid-scale solar generation recently reached a new peak of 1.3 GW, at times supplying more than one-third of the country's dispatchable electricity demand.
This rapid growth reflects a broader transformation. Just over a decade ago, Ireland had only 2 MW of solar capacity. Total renewable generation capacity has now surpassed 8 GW, with nearly 5 GW added in the past ten years .
The residential sector has played a significant role. More than 200,000 Irish homes have installed solar panels, with over 120,000 households receiving government grant support. The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) received over 31,000 solar PV applications in the first seven months of 2026 alone - a 76% increase year-on-year. The solar rollout has also extended to schools, with 2,000 institutions receiving free PV systems .
Government support schemes - including the Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (RESS), the Small-Scale Renewable Electricity Support Scheme (SRESS), and the Microgeneration Support Scheme - have underpinned this growth. The government has committed to maintaining the Solar PV grant through 2030, providing long-term policy certainty .
Industry body Solar Ireland has highlighted that the next phase should focus on expanding rooftop solar, battery storage deployment, and continued grid investment. As solar penetration increases, energy storage is expected to play an increasingly critical role in balancing supply and demand, enabling daytime generation to be utilised during evening peak hours .
Based on current trends, Ireland's total connected solar capacity is projected to exceed 3.3 GW by the end of 2026, reflecting sustained momentum across all market segments .
