A major polysilicon manufacturing initiative in Queensland has taken a significant step forward, as Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners and Townsville City Council sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to advance the Northern Quartz Campus project.
Located at the Lansdown Eco-Industrial Precinct, the Northern Quartz Campus is planned to become Australia's first integrated manufacturing facility processing locally sourced quartz sand into high-value silicon materials for solar PV, semiconductors, and other advanced technology applications.
The AUD 7.8 billion project has already received conditional land use approval from Townsville City Council. The newly signed MoU paves the way for a final Project Development and Infrastructure Agreement, expected to be concluded by the end of 2026.
This upcoming agreement will define the Council's infrastructure delivery responsibilities and Solquartz's financial contributions toward first-stage infrastructure costs. The Northern Quartz Campus is forecast to create up to 1,200 jobs during both construction and operational phases, with commercial operations targeted for 2030.
Quinbrook Senior Vice President Vignesh Bandi noted that the MoU represents a key step in integrating renewable energy, storage, and manufacturing at the Lansdown site, emphasising that a project of this scale relies on coordinated infrastructure, government support, and private capital.
Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto confirmed that the agreement signals the precinct's transition from planning to construction, following years of groundwork and preparatory work.
In a parallel development, Quinbrook is also progressing the Supernode North battery energy storage system at the same Lansdown location. This long-duration storage project is designed to support energy-intensive manufacturing and unlock additional grid capacity for the precinct.
