As part of a broader push toward sustainable aviation infrastructure, solar energy is rapidly expanding across Brazilian airports, with Natal International Airport leading the charge through a landmark photovoltaic installation.
5 MW Solar Plant Nears Completion at Natal Airport
Natal International Airport in Rio Grande do Norte has reached a significant milestone in its solar energy journey, having completed the installation of 11 photovoltaic panels for a new 5 MW solar power plant. The project, backed by an investment of R$ 24 million, is now in its final implementation phase and is scheduled for inauguration in early November.
Once operational, the facility will generate approximately 1 million kWh per month-enough to power around 6,800 households with average monthly consumption of 150 kWh. Upon completion, it will stand as the largest self-consumption solar power plant in Rio Grande do Norte.
Remaining work includes pipeline infrastructure installation, pole and overhead cable mounting, grid connection, and final system testing. The project is being executed by locally based WSO Solar, a company headquartered in Rio Grande do Norte.
Environmental Impact and Decarbonization Goals
The solar plant is expected to deliver annual CO₂ reductions of 654 tons. Beyond its operational and environmental benefits, the initiative forms a core component of Zurich Airport Brazil's decarbonization strategy, supporting the company's commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2040 across all airports it manages in the country.
Solar Expansion Across Brazilian Airports
The momentum extends well beyond Natal. Zurich Airport Brasil has invested R$ 20 million in a four-plant photovoltaic complex at Vitória Airport (ES), featuring a total installed capacity of 5,787 MWp and approximately 8,000 modules.
Earlier this year, the concessionaire also commissioned a 1 MW solar plant at Macaé Airport (RJ), comprising 1,440 panels and sized to fully supply the airport complex's entire electricity demand.
These developments underscore a growing trend: solar energy is becoming a mainstream power source for airport operations across Brazil, supporting both facility consumption and operational applications.
