In the vast expanse of China's Kubuqi Desert, a remarkable transformation is underway. What was once an arid landscape now hosts a sea of deep blue photovoltaic panels, a 2-gigawatt solar farm known as the "Blue Steed." This project stands as a powerful testament to the multi-faceted potential of modern solar energy, extending far beyond clean electricity generation to become a catalyst for ecological restoration and sustainable economic development.

Officially connected to the grid in late 2023, this landmark initiative is recognized as one of the first large-scale wind and PV base projects launched during China's "14th Five-Year Plan" period. With an estimated annual output of approximately 41 billion kilowatt-hours of green electricity, it is projected to save about 1.23 million tonnes of standard coal and reduce CO2 emissions by around 3.19 million tonnes annually.

A Triple Win: Energy, Ecology, and Economy

The project's success is rooted in a "PV + Desert Control" model that creates a synergistic cycle of benefits:

Ecological Restoration: The solar arrays significantly reduce ground-level wind speed and provide shade, decreasing water evaporation. This creates a microclimate conducive to vegetation growth. Innovative techniques, including straw grid sand fixation, drone seeding, and data-driven planting, have accelerated the desert's greening. According to project reports, these combined efforts have achieved stable sand fixation in roughly four years-a process that historically took a decade-while rehabilitating 100,000 mu (approx. 6,667 hectares) of desert land.

Economic Empowerment: The project has become a vital local economic engine. During construction, it provided over 1,000 jobs for local residents. In its operational phase, it continues to create employment through panel maintenance, and the novel "board-up power generation, board-down planting, board-between breeding" model. This approach facilitates the cultivation of medicinal herbs and forage, as well as poultry farming beneath and between the panels, fostering a new ecological agriculture industry.

Resilient Clean Energy: Built to withstand harsh desert conditions, the project utilizes robust foundations and pioneering technology. It is notably China's first large-scale desert PV project to extensively implement flexible mounting systems. Furthermore, it incorporates a commercially operated megawatt-scale perovskite PV unit, showcasing a commitment to technological innovation for the future of energy.

A Foundation for the Future: The Role of Mounting Systems

The success of such ambitious desert projects hinges on specialized infrastructure. The extreme environment-from abrasive sands to strong winds-demands mounting systems of exceptional durability and reliability. The use of engineered foundations, including concrete piles and innovative flexible structures, is critical to ensuring the long-term stability and performance of the solar array, guaranteeing that the "Blue Steed" continues its gallop for decades to come.

"As a company dedicated to providing high-quality solar mounting solutions, Longsun Green is inspired by projects that push the boundaries of what solar energy can achieve," said a spokesperson for Longsun Green. "Seeing how robust mounting systems form the backbone of such transformative initiatives reinforces our commitment to engineering products that not only support panels but also support a sustainable future."
