Solar power generation in the United Kingdom reached a historic high during the first half of 2025, driven by favorable weather conditions and rapidly expanding photovoltaic (PV) deployment. According to data released by the energy think tank Ember, the UK generated 9.91 TWh of solar electricity during this period, representing a remarkable 32% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2024. Solar output has set new records for five consecutive months since March 2025, underscoring the accelerating adoption of solar energy across the country.
The record-breaking performance can be attributed to one of the sunniest years in UK history, combined with continued growth in solar installations. Ember's report also highlights a notable shift in the residential solar segment: homeowners are increasingly opting for larger, more powerful systems. While small-scale installations dominated the market from 2010 to 2019 due to subsidy policies, high-capacity residential systems now account for half of the newly installed capacity.
UK government data reveals that, as of the end of July 2025, the total installed capacity of residential PV systems up to 4 kW reached 4 GW, while systems ranging from 4 kW to 10 kW reached 1.4 GW. However, newly added capacity in 2025 remained almost evenly distributed between these two segments, with 258 MW and 226 MW, respectively.
