Tesla has signed two long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) with renewable energy developers Zelestra and ContourGlobal, securing 600 MW of planned solar capacity across Arizona and Texas. The deals underscore how the electric vehicle and clean energy company is aligning its electricity procurement strategy with its rapidly expanding artificial intelligence operations.

Energy Demand Driven by AI Expansion

In its 2025 annual report, Tesla signaled that electricity consumption would rise significantly as it scales up AI computing capacity. The company is currently constructing "Cortex 2" at Gigafactory Texas to enhance its AI training capabilities, making long-term renewable energy procurement a strategic priority.

The ContourGlobal agreement covers approximately 900 GWh of operational output in 2028, with a 90% capacity factor. Meanwhile, the Zelestra deal grants Tesla full rights to the 140 MWac output from the Lumen Farm solar project in Arizona, though that facility is not expected to reach full operations until 2029.

16-Hour Continuous Power Capability

A standout feature of the ContourGlobal project is its ability to deliver up to 16 hours of continuous power daily through an integrated solar-plus-battery configuration. This design enables electricity supply beyond sunset, addressing one of solar energy's traditional limitations. According to a ContourGlobal spokesperson, around-the-clock renewables are commercially feasible within 12 to 18 months, though full commercial deployment is not yet in place.

Expanding Relationship

The Lumen Farm agreement builds on an existing relationship between Tesla and Zelestra, which signed multiple PPAs in Spain during 2024. As Zelestra's U.S. CEO noted, the company is now delivering bespoke renewable solutions to Tesla across multiple geographies.

Broader Industry Context

The deals reflect a wider trend in the U.S. energy sector, where technology companies are increasingly locking in long-term renewable electricity supplies to support AI infrastructure growth. This shift occurs alongside ongoing policy debates about generation capacity expansion, energy affordability, and the transition away from coal-fired power plants.
