Kenya's energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, characterized by robust growth in electricity demand and a strong commitment to renewable energy expansion. As a leading manufacturer of high-quality solar mounting systems, Longsun Green is keenly observing these developments, which present substantial opportunities for the solar industry.

According to the latest annual statistical report from Kenya's Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), the country's total electricity consumption continues to rise steadily. A record peak demand of 2,316.2 MW was recorded in February 2025, underscoring the nation's growing economic activity and electrification. While large industrial and commercial users remain the primary electricity consumers, residential usage has shown notable growth. Particularly striking is the surge in electricity consumption for road lighting and electric mobility, the latter seeing a dramatic increase, supported by innovative tariff policies.

A standout feature of Kenya's power sector is its high reliance on renewable sources, which constitute over 80% of the total installed generation capacity. Geothermal power is the single largest contributor, followed by hydro and thermal power. The solar photovoltaic (PV) segment holds a significant and growing share, with a cumulative installed capacity reaching 514.1 MW as of June 2025. Notably, capacity for self-consumption (captive power) has seen rapid growth, increasing by 31.1% compared to the previous year and now representing a major portion of the solar PV market. This trend highlights the increasing adoption of solar solutions by commercial and industrial entities seeking energy reliability and cost savings.

Kenya's national development plans further reinforce this direction. The country has set ambitious targets to achieve 100% renewable power generation by 2035 and to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This policy commitment provides a stable, long-term framework for renewable energy investments.

The growth in variable renewable energy like solar and wind, however, introduces grid management challenges. Kenya's system experiences high daytime solar generation and a distinct evening peak demand, creating a need for greater flexibility. Industry analysts anticipate that energy storage systems, both at utility and grid levels, will play a crucial role in ensuring grid stability and optimizing renewable energy use in the coming years.

The broader African market context is also encouraging. Recent trade data indicates that photovoltaic module exports from China to Africa have seen substantial year-on-year growth, reflecting rising demand across the continent.
