Ascot Racecourse has taken a notable step toward reducing its environmental footprint by commissioning a large-scale rooftop solar installation. Developed in collaboration with SSE Energy Solutions and Ortus Energy, the project is set to become one of the most significant on-site solar systems in UK sport.
The rooftop array spans the 480-metre-long Grandstand roof, with a total capacity of 608.04 kWp and over 1,200 solar panels. Once fully connected to the grid in early summer, the system is expected to generate approximately 569,000 kWh of renewable electricity in its first year.
According to project disclosures, this output will offset around 9% of Ascot's annual electricity consumption and reduce carbon emissions by an estimated 118 tonnes of CO₂e in the first year. All energy produced will be consumed on-site, supporting daily operations, race days, and more than 180 non-racing events held at the venue each year.
The installation positions Ascot alongside other major sporting venues such as the London Stadium and Manchester City's campus. It is also considered a flagship project within British horse racing.
The system is fully integrated into the existing Grandstand, originally opened in 2006, demonstrating that large-scale renewable infrastructure can be added to heritage venues without compromising their character or operational efficiency.
Beyond emissions reduction, the project highlights how on-site solar generation helps organisations manage exposure to volatile energy prices and improve operational resilience. This trend aligns with UK Sport's recognition of environmental sustainability as a core pillar of its social impact strategy.
As the UK government targets a fivefold increase in solar capacity to 45–47 GW by 2030, projects like Ascot's show that commercial rooftop solar is a practical and immediate pathway to cutting emissions, particularly in complex, high-profile environments.
