According to industry reports, the 120MW Kairouan solar PV plant, developed by UAE-based AMEA Power, has begun commercial operations. Located in the Kairouan governorate, this facility is recognized as the largest operational PV project in Tunisia to date.
Initiated in May 2024, the Kairouan project represents the first renewable energy initiative in the country to surpass 100MW in capacity. Reports indicate it has achieved several national firsts, including being the inaugural project under a specific government concessions program for larger-scale projects to complete both financial closure and commercial operation. The project's financing was reportedly secured with support from international financial institutions.
A key technical achievement highlighted for this plant is its direct connection to the national high-voltage transmission grid, a significant step for integrating large-scale renewable energy into Tunisia's power infrastructure. The Chairman of AMEA Power was cited stating that this plant marks an important milestone for the country's energy transition and enhances its energy security through clean electricity.
Market analysis suggests this project is a precursor to further growth in Tunisia's solar sector, with several other 100MW+ projects reportedly in the pipeline from various international developers. Data from the energy think tank Ember indicated Tunisia's installed solar capacity was approximately 770MW by the end of 2024, signaling substantial potential for future expansion.
