Plug-in Solar Panels Arrive in Supermarkets: A New Option for Households Without Suitable Roofs

Plug-in solar panels are set to become available in supermarkets across the south of England. The move opens up solar energy to households that previously could not install traditional rooftop systems-including flats, homes with unsuitable roofs, or properties with limited outdoor space. These compact kits can be installed on balconies, gardens, or any other outdoor area. Government estimates suggest a typical household could save between £70 and £110 per year on energy bills by using plug-in solar. Prices are expected to start at around £400.Recent data shows there are now more than 180,000 solar installations across the region, ranging from single panels on homes to large solar farms. The plug-in models work by feeding free solar power directly into a mains socket, reducing the amount of electricity drawn from the grid and lowering energy costs without the need for professional installation.Already widely adopted across Europe, Germany sees approximately half a million new plug-in solar devices connected each year. One early adopter in the UK, Kevin Ray from Headley, installed two panels purchased from Germany. He reports that on sunny days, the 800-watt system covers most of his home's daytime background load. The launch comes as the government intensifies efforts to expand clean, homegrown power. Just weeks ago, new regulations introduced in England require most new homes to be fitted with solar panels as a standard feature.Looking ahead, experts note that solar power may play an even greater role as British summers grow hotter. The Climate Change Committee has warned that within 25 years, all care homes and hospitals will need air conditioning to cope with rising global temperatures. Solar panels could help power such equipment at a lower cost.

Professor Emma Tompkins from Southampton University advises households to consider broader adaptation measures, such as planting trees for shade, installing awnings, or painting roofs white to reduce heat absorption.
