December 3, 2025 – The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has pledged substantial conditional funding, amounting to AU$151 million, to Sunman Energy. This investment is earmarked for developing a new 500MW solar module production facility in New South Wales' Hunter Valley, a region historically known for coal mining.
This grant represents the most significant single allocation from the federal government's ambitious AU$1 billion Solar Sunshot initiative. The program is designed to bolster Australia's position in the global photovoltaic supply chain by fostering domestic manufacturing capabilities.
Spearheaded by the Sunman Group, the project will leverage innovative lightweight solar panel technology. Industry analysts highlight that this move not only promotes local technological innovation but is also expected to lower module costs by reducing dependency on imports. The state government of NSW has further reinforced the project with an additional AU$20 million in support, targeting operational commencement by 2029.
ARENA's CEO emphasized that such projects are pivotal in transforming Australia's energy landscape, moving from heavy reliance on imported solar products to establishing self-sufficient, export-oriented clean energy hubs. Sunman, with existing manufacturing bases in China and the United States, is part of a broader wave of investments under the Solar Sunshot umbrella.
This funding follows earlier grants to other companies, including support for feasibility studies into producing key upstream components like polysilicon within Australia. A second funding round, launched recently with AU$150 million, specifically targets commercial manufacturing of critical solar supply chain segments.
