Large-Scale Illinois Solar Farm Faces New Delay After County Commission Rejects Proposal Again

A proposed 6,100-acre solar development in Will County, Illinois, has encountered another setback. The county's Planning and Zoning Commission voted 4–1 against the project during a court-ordered hearing, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The project, named "Pride of the Prairie," is a 600-megawatt solar farm proposed by Earthrise Energy near Manhattan, Illinois. The latest vote marks the second round of opposition after a county judge ruled that attorneys representing local homeowners had not been given adequate opportunity to question executives or submit evidence during prior hearings.

While the vote does not officially terminate the proposal, it significantly delays the development of a major source of clean electricity. The Will County Board's executive committee is expected to vote on the project on May 21. If approved at that stage, Earthrise Energy would still need to complete additional county-level reviews before construction can begin.

Despite this setback, solar development continues to move forward elsewhere in the region. Last month, Will County Board members approved another Earthrise solar project near Crete, covering 2,400 acres. This indicates that large-scale renewable energy projects can still succeed when they align with local requirements.

Projects of this magnitude play an important role in replacing fossil fuel-based power with cleaner solar energy. Delays or rejections of such developments can slow the transition toward a less carbon-intensive grid and reduce potential public health benefits associated with lower pollution.
