Floating Solar Powers Salmon Farm Above Arctic Circle

A Norwegian salmon farm located above the Arctic Circle now sources over 90% of its electricity from floating solar panels installed around its pens-despite receiving fewer than five hours of daylight in January. Since the system's deployment, the site's diesel generator has remained largely idle.

 

The solution, developed by Alotta (formerly Inseanergy), repurposes fish-pen float collars-materials typically discarded by the aquaculture industry-as the foundation for floating solar platforms paired with battery storage. The success at Emilsen Fisk in Trøndelag prompted a second unit order within weeks, partially funded by Norway's Enova agency.

 

Alotta has since expanded to Chile, the world's second-largest salmon producer, where over 600 off-grid farms consume an estimated 60 million liters of diesel annually. In 2025, the company delivered Chile's first at-sea floating solar plant at a Mowi farm, saving approximately 139,200 liters of diesel per year. A subsequent fifteen-year agreement with Trusal includes options for five additional units, which could reduce diesel consumption by roughly 10 million liters and cut nearly 27,000 metric tons of CO₂ over the contract term.

 

Rather than selling hardware, Alotta owns and operates the systems, charging farmers for the electricity generated-a model that attracted $6.3 million in funding this October to accelerate Chilean expansion.

 

While solar and storage do not fully eliminate diesel generators, they significantly cut fuel costs and emissions. The model has proven viable even in extreme northern latitudes, with scalability now driven by economics rather than technology.
