Egypt is set to connect the second phase of a major solar project to its national electricity grid in May 2026, marking another step forward in the country's rapidly expanding renewable energy infrastructure.
According to a statement cited by Al Borsa on April 21, Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mahmoud Essmat confirmed that the 500MW second phase of the Obelisk solar power project, located in Nagaa Hammadi, will begin delivering power to the grid in late spring 2026.
The announcement followed a meeting between the minister and representatives from Scatec, a Norwegian renewable energy company active across multiple energy sectors in Egypt. The company is currently implementing solar and wind projects in the country with a combined capacity of 3,100MW.
Beyond generation, Scatec is also developing energy storage battery projects totaling 4,000 MWh across four governorates: the Red Sea, Qena, Minya, and Alexandria. These storage systems are designed to enhance grid stability and support the integration of variable renewable energy sources.
During the same meeting, officials reviewed progress on a 900MW wind energy project at Ras Shuqayr, which is expected to be grid-connected in 2027. A larger 1,700MW solar project in Minya was also discussed. In addition, connected and standalone energy storage stations with a combined capacity of 4,000 MW are being planned across Minya, Alexandria, and Qena.
A key industrial development highlighted during the discussions was a planned energy storage battery factory, with production scheduled to begin by the end of 2027. The facility represents an investment of approximately $1.8 billion.
According to Minister Essmat, these projects are being developed in partnership with the private sector and align closely with Egypt's long-term sustainable development objectives. The meeting also addressed practical measures to accelerate project implementation, resolve existing challenges, and ensure timely grid connection milestones are met.
Clean energy generated from these initiatives is expected to supply industrial zones such as Wadi El Sereya, contributing to both grid flexibility and regional economic development.
