A 68.6-MWac (71.7-MWdc) solar power station has officially commenced commercial operations in Okayama prefecture, Japan. The Manabi Solar Power Station was developed by Vena Energy, the renewable energy arm of Singapore-based Vena Group, with Japanese energy-tech company Digital Grid Co Ltd overseeing the project's commissioning.

The solar facility is built on a former golf course site, which eliminated the need for land clearing or new forest development-a notable approach in a country where suitable land for utility-scale solar is often limited.

The electricity generated by the plant is expected to reach approximately 85 million kilowatt-hours annually. All environmental credits associated with the project will be supplied to LINE Yahoo Corp, a major Japanese internet and technology company, under a 20-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA). This arrangement is projected to help LINE Yahoo offset an estimated 740,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions over the contract period.

This development highlights the growing role of corporate renewable energy procurement in Japan, where businesses are increasingly turning to long-term VPPAs to meet sustainability targets and reduce carbon footprints. The project also demonstrates how previously developed land-such as retired golf courses-can be repurposed for clean energy generation, minimizing environmental impact while contributing to the country's energy transition.

As Japan continues to pursue its decarbonization goals, projects like Manabi Solar represent a practical model for integrating renewable energy into the grid while balancing land-use constraints and corporate climate commitments.
